As parents, we want our kids to love reading the Bible. It’s full of God’s promises, stories of His faithfulness, and encouragement they can carry for life. But with so many Bibles out there, how do you know which one is best for your child or teen?

Here are four questions to help:

  1. What’s your child’s age and reading level?
The Bible should feel approachable — not confusing. Choose based on their age and comprehension.

  • Ages 1-4: Start with Bible board books and storybook Bibles that use simple language and bright illustrations.

  • Ages 5-8: Storybook Bibles like “The Jesus Storybook Bible” and “Beginner’s Bible” are great tools for introducing key themes.

  • Ages 9-12: Consider full-text Bibles with devotionals or study guides. Kids at this age can begin navigating scripture for themselves.

  • Ages 13-17: Look for teen Bibles with features like journaling prompts, devotionals, or Q&As that speak directly to their season of life.

2. What Bible translation fits their reading level?
Choose a translation they can actually understand.

  • Younger kids: NIrV (New International Reader’s Version) is a great choice.

  • Preteens and teens: NIV, NLT, and CSB are solid, easy-to-read translations.

3. How will they use their Bible?
Think through the setting.

  • For bedtime stories or family devo time, go with a storybook or age-specific devotional Bible.

  • For church, youth group, or personal study, choose a full-text Bible with helpful features like a study Bible that gives context and history or includes a concordance, and daily readings.

  • For journaling or prayer, consider a Bible with space to write or reflect.

4. How can I help them engage with it?
No matter the age, your presence matters. Explore their Bible together.

  • Ask simple questions like:

  • “What does this story tell us about God?”

  • “Is there anything you want to ask Him about today?”

  • Let them see you reading yours. Model the habit.

  • Celebrate when they take a step — even a small one — in opening God’s Word.
