What We Are Learning In Elementary :: May Week 3
May Overview: Throughout the Bible, we see God’s people showing care for others. Through these stories, kids will discover five different ways they can show care for the people around them.
Bible Story: Joseph Forgives His Brothers (Genesis 37-45)
Main Point: I can care for others by forgiving.
Memory Verse: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
As a family, read the Bible story together. Then, watch this week’s lesson video on the eKidz Online YouTube page to continue the conversation.
(The story of Joseph and his brothers is long! Consider reading one chapter a night as a family until you’ve finished it. If you need to shorten it, you can read chapters 37, 42, and 45, and help your kid understand that Joseph’s brothers sold him, then later, when Joseph was put in charge of the food in Egypt, his brothers had to ask him for help. And Joseph forgave them and helped them!)
This week, kids learned caring for others sometimes means choosing forgiveness, even when it’s difficult. Joseph’s brothers hurt him deeply, and he could have stayed angry or gotten even. Instead, he chose to forgive and show kindness. When someone hurts us, forgiveness can feel really hard, but this story helps kids see that forgiveness is a powerful way to care for others.
💬 Family discussion questions:
What did Joseph’s brothers do to him?
How did Joseph respond later when they needed his help?
Why can forgiveness be hard? How does it show others we care?
🕰 Engage in everyday moments together this week:
When You Get Up: Say, “Remember, you can choose forgiveness today.”
While You’re At Home: Talk about what forgiveness means and some situations where we can do it.
As You’re On The Way: Ask, “Why is forgiveness an important way to care?”
When You Lie Down: Pray, “God, help us forgive others the way You forgive us. We love You. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”
