All I Do Is Wind!
Tim Somers
Conversation Starters
Pastor Tim described himself as “extra.” What’s one word you would use to describe yourself?
What song would you choose as your walk-out or theme song?
Pick the school assignment you’d rather do: a long division workbook, a science fair presentation, a book report, or a group project.
Review
Ask eGroup members to share their favorite points from the sermon, what spoke to them, a phrase or moment from the sermon they related to the most, or questions they have. If members have a hard time recalling the sermon, talk through your notes and share your favorite points.
Make It Personal
Pastor Tim said, “Your maturity in the Lord is how fast you’ll obey God.” On a scale of 1-10, how quick are you on average to obey God? (1 is slow, 10 is fast) What are some things that might make you hesitate to obey?
When you think of assignments from God, what are some things that come to mind? How would you describe the difference between an assignment and an opportunity? (How do you know when God is giving you an assignment?)
Read Jonah 1:1-4. In what way does Jonah’s story speak to you? How do you relate to his actions?
Where are places in your life where you “don’t want to” do something that you feel you should? What do you think the assignment is that God is asking you to do? (What assignments have you been fleeing from? Are you fleeing from something that’s an assignment from God?)
Go deeper. Read Jonah 1:4. God created this wind to drive Jonah back to his assignment. Talk about what “wind” might look like practically in our lives (when God is trying to turn us back to an assignment). How has God used wind in your life to return you to an assignment? (Are there winds He’s sending you right now?)
We glorify opportunity but flee from assignments. How do you see this playing out in culture? Are there any ways you can personally relate to this? (What are some opportunities you’ve been glorifying? Have you ever fled from an assignment in the past?)
Read Jonah 1:15-17. If God delivers us but doesn’t discipline us, we never learn. Share a time when discipline produced fruit in your life. How can that fruit encourage you to obey faster when God gives you an assignment?
Act On It
Choose an assignment you’ve been running from that you’re going to embrace this week. Tell your group one action step you can take toward that assignment, and do it.
Prayer Requests And Prayer
Ask eGroup members to share any prayer requests they have. Record any notes or prayer requests to pray for members during the week.Father, thank You for the patience and grace You show even when we don’t obey an assignment You give us. Help us see the difference between the assignments You’re giving us and the opportunities we’re trying to follow for ourselves. In Jesus’ name, amen.
