We Are We Label

Conversation Starters
Looking for a way to get the group talking? Try one of these conversation starters.
This weekend Pastor shared a story about someone choosing Fritos because someone told her they were healthier than Doritos. What changes have you made in your life because you believed someone’s label? How long did you hold onto that belief?
Play this quick game to determine how often you rely on labels: Read the prompts below and ask group members to score themselves as follows:
I almost never do this: 0 points
I sometimes do this: 1 point
I almost always do this: 2 points
Do you read food labels in the grocery store when deciding between products?
Is the food in your pantry or fridge labeled?
Do you own a label maker?
Do you scour online reviews before making a purchase?
Do you rely on a product’s star rating when online shopping?
Do you choose what movies to watch based on critics’ reviews?
Do you choose what to read based on best sellers lists?
Do you find yourself searching “best gifts for…” when looking for gift ideas?
Sermon Reflection
Help transition the group to the discussion with one of these questions.
What stood out to you from this week’s message?
What from the message encouraged you/challenged you the most?
Sermon Discussion
Select 1-2 themes from the sermon to discuss with your eGroup.
What was your word that you wrote down (confidence, peace, joy, etc.) and what belief do you need to change in order to see victory in this area?
This week, Pastor Steven reminded us that “God keeps 100% of His promises.”
In what ways do you latch onto labels that cause you to judge yourself or others?
Name some ways you’ve limited situations by labeling before God was done working.
What can you do to limit exposure to things that tempt you to label? Could a break from social media, news, or politics help you align with how God labels? Or a break from conversations that involve gossip? Share with your group some steps you can take this week to stop labeling things in ways that limit.
Romans 4:18 says “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations…” Abraham believed and so he became. His faith allowed him to believe though he did not see or understand yet.
What is one thing you believe God wants you to become that you don’t feel like you are right now? (Emphasize traits that are clearly aligned with scripture. Consider the fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23 if you need help with this.)
What do you need to believe in order to become what God wants you to be? (Consider the scripture from the activating faith section if needed)
How can you apply these beliefs to your life this week?
In Numbers 13:30, after spying out the land, Caleb came to the conclusion that the Israelites were “well able to overcome” whatever challenges they would face in conquering what God had promised to them. Whatever God is calling us to, we are well able.
Describe a time you have seen God do more than what originally seemed possible in a situation.
In what ways do you hold yourself back by labels of who you were, or how you messed up?
What could you do to you remind yourself of how God labels you throughout your day so you can remove the limitations you put on yourself?
Activating Faith
Challenge your group to keep activating their faith. Make this a part of your eGroup time or send this activity to them after you meet.In 1 Samuel 16:7, the Lord tells the prophet Samuel not to judge based on what things look like, “For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Select a scripture that speaks to a label God has placed on your life. Take a moment to pray and ask God to help you receive this label.

Prayer
Close out your group with prayer using one of these options
Interactive Prayer:
Break the group up into groups of 2-3. Ask individuals to share a prayer request and take a minute to lay hands on and pray for one another before the group ends.
Ask people to pray for the one thing you believe God wants you to become that you don’t feel like you are right now.
Guided Prayer:
God, thank you that you do not limit your work in us based on our mistakes. Help us to believe what you believe about us, and not to be limited by what we see. Give us faith like Abraham to become who you have called and created us to become, and to trust that you will finish the good work you started in us. Help us to change our beliefs and not only our behaviors. In Jesus name. Amen.
