The Main Thing:

Spending time with Jesus through service changes me.

Start Talking (Conversation Starter):

What’s a small thing that means a lot when someone does it for you?

Explore the Scripture:

Read John 13:1-17 together. Spend some time talking about the passage.

  • What words, phrases, or actions stand out?

  • What questions does this passage raise?

  • What’s God showing you about the passage?

  • What does this passage reveal about Jesus or people?

Look again at verses 12-17. What do you think Jesus wanted His disciples to understand from what He did?

Unpack It:

Discuss what you read and what you heard.

  • Washing someone’s feet was a humble, practical act of service. Why do you think Jesus chose to teach His disciples this way instead of simply telling them to serve?

  • What does Jesus’ willingness to serve His disciples reveal about Him?

  • How could spending time with Jesus change the way we notice and respond to other people’s needs?

  • Which verses challenge or encourage you most? What about the message challenged or encouraged you?

Own It:

Make the Scripture personal.

  • What could change if you approached serving as a way to be with Jesus instead of simply something you do for Him?

  • Where has God already placed you — at school, work, practice, home, or somewhere else — where you could pay closer attention to what someone needs?

  • How’s God calling you to apply what you read or what you heard?

Live It:

Take action to apply what you learned.

  • In your Leader Overview are three ways students can spend time with Jesus through service. Talk about each one, and challenge your group to do one of them.

Prayer:

End your meeting by inviting someone to pray for the group to follow Jesus’ example, notice the needs around them, and allow time with Him to change the way they see and serve others.
