Middle School Week 1 (March 4): Listening & Doing
Series Overview:
There’s something powerful about realizing your faith isn’t meant to stay inside. What God is doing in you is meant to show up through your words, your choices, and even your prayers. Faith was never designed to be something you simply agree with — it’s something you live out.
James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
Listening is important, but obedience is what transforms us. God’s Word acts like a mirror. Just like a mirror shows the reflection of who we are, His Word shows us what’s true about who we are and who He’s calling us to become. The blessing isn’t in hearing it once a week; it’s in allowing it to shape how we respond every day.
In a culture that speaks fast and posts faster, James invites us into a different rhythm — one where we slow down, pray first, and let God’s truth guide what comes out of us. We’re not just talking about knowing scripture. We’re calling students to live it. To represent Jesus with intention. To let prayer shape their responses. And to step into a faith that is active, visible, and rooted in obedience rather than just information.
Series Verse:
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22
Discussion Goal:
God’s Word changes us when we listen to it and live it out.
Start Talking (Conversation Starter):
What’s something you know you’re supposed to do… but you don’t always actually do it? (e.g., clean your room, do your homework, don’t gossip, etc.)
Optional activity: Would You REALLY?
Tell students you’re going to read some situations out loud. If they think they would ACTUALLY do it, they’ll raise their hand. If they probably wouldn’t, they’ll keep their hands down. Challenge everyone to be honest!
You find $20 on the ground at school, and instead of keeping it, you turn it in.
Your alarm goes off, and you get up the first time.
Someone insults you, and you respond kindly.
You remember to do homework the day it’s assigned.
You tell someone you’ll pray for them — and actually do it that day.
You decide not to check your phone for a whole hour, and you go through with it.
You agree to go somewhere with a friend that you REALLY don’t want to go to, but you follow through and go with them.
Think It Through (and Talk It Out)
Leader Tip: Choose questions that resonate with your group’s age, experiences, and current understanding. There’s no pressure to cover all the questions — pick the ones that fit your group the best.
Leader Say: “Have you ever heard something really good — at church, from a parent, or online — and thought, “Yeah, I should do that”… but then nothing changed?
It’s easy to listen. It’s harder to live it. We’re surrounded by information, but knowing more doesn’t change you. Doing something with what you know does.
In this series, we’re looking at the book of James. He says don’t just hear God’s Word — live it. Real faith shows up in your reactions, your choices, and even your group chats. What God is doing inside of you should show up on the outside. Because growth isn’t about knowing more. It’s about living out what you know. Let’s talk about what that looks like!”
Read James 1:19-27. What stands out to you in this passage? What challenges or encourages you?
⬆️ Leader Tip: This is a longer passage! Encourage youth to do more than just read it — they can circle or underline key words and phrases, highlight things that stand out to them, write notes in the margins of their Bible, etc. Help them move from "reading" to "studying!"
James tells us that listening to God’s Word is like a mirror. What’s a mirror used for? Why would James say listening to God’s Word is like a mirror?
None of us looks in a mirror only to not do something with what we see. The mirror shows us something, and it's up to us whether or not we do anything with our image. But when we don’t do anything with what the mirror shows us, it’s like we forget who we are. Why do you think living out God’s Word is so important? Why isn’t knowing what’s right and wrong enough?
What’s one area of your life where you know the right thing to do, but you struggle to actually do it?
What would it look like to take one small step this week so you can live this out? How could that begin changing you?
Pray: God, thank You for speaking to us through Your Word. Help us to not just hear it but to live it. Show us where our actions don’t line up with what we say we believe. Give us courage to respond with obedience instead of just forgetting what we know. Shape our choices so they reflect You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Additional Questions
Why is it easier to hear something than to live it out? Why doesn’t knowing the right thing automatically change us?
Read James 1:19 again. Which of these things that James says is hardest for you to do? What would change if you started following what he says?
When do you feel the most pressure to fit in or go along with others instead of following what God says? (e.g. at school, with friends, during sports, etc.) What would it look like to be a “doer of the Word” in that situation?
