Discussion Goal:

Pray first, then speak.

Start Talking (Conversation Starter):

What’s something funny, awkward, or random you’ve said that you wish you could take back?

Optional activity: First Reaction Challenge

Read these scenarios out loud. Students have three seconds to shout out how they would respond.

  • Someone posts an embarrassing picture of you.

  • Your sibling takes something from your room without asking.

  • A friend leaves you out of plans.

  • Someone makes a rude comment about you in a group chat.

  • You get blamed for something you didn’t do.

  • A friend takes a piece of food off your plate without asking.

  • Your parent gives you a hug and a kiss in front of your friends.

Think It Through (and Talk It Out)

Leader Tip: Choose questions that resonate with your group’s age, experiences, and current understanding. There’s no pressure to cover all the questions — pick the ones that fit your group the best.

Leader Say: “Have you ever sent a text you wish you could take back? Or said something in the moment because you were mad, embarrassed, or just trying to be funny — and then instantly regretted it?

Words move fast. Texts, comments, snaps — they’re out there in seconds. Most of the time, we speak from whatever we’re feeling right now. But feelings change. Screenshots don’t.

In Week 2, we’re looking at how prayer shapes our words. James talks about how powerful our tongues are. They can build someone up or burn everything down. And he reminds us that when we pray first, it changes what comes out next. When prayer leads your life, your words carry God’s direction instead of just your reaction.

Here’s the big idea: Pray first, then speak. Because when you slow down and invite God into what you’re about to say, your words can bring life instead of regret. Let’s talk about what that looks like in real life — at school, at home, and even in your group chats.”

  • Read James 3:1-12. How would you describe what James is trying to tell us here? Where do you see words having the most impact in your life right now? (e.g., school, sports, group chats, home, online, etc.)

    • ⬆️ Leader Tip: This is a longer passage! Encourage youth to do more than just read it — they can circle or underline key words and phrases, highlight things that stand out to them, write notes in the margins of their Bible, etc. Help them move from "reading" to "studying!"

    • When are some times it can be hard for you to control what comes out of your mouth? Why?

  • We’ve been talking about how hard it is to control our words. James also talks about something powerful that can change us — prayer. Now read James 5:13-16. James tells us the prayers of a righteous person — someone who is following and obeying God — are powerful. How can praying first help us with our words?

    • If prayer is powerful, how might praying before we speak change what we say?

    • Why is it usually easier to react first and pray later?

    • What would it look like to pause and pray before responding the next time you’re upset?

  • Where do you most need to pray before you speak? What might change in your friendships or family if you started praying before reacting when you’re frustrated?

Pray: God, thank You for caring about our words and our hearts. You know how easy it is for us to react without thinking. Help us slow down and pray first. Teach us to use our words to bring life, not regret. Remind us who we are in You so that what comes out of our mouths reflects You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Additional Questions

  • What kind of person do you want to be with your words? (e.g., kind, calm, encouraging, etc.) How could praying before you speak help you become that person?

  • What’s one situation this week where you know you might need some self-control with your words? How can you begin praying for that now?

  • When do you usually pray? After something happens, or before? What's one way you could pray differently this week?
