High School Week 2 (May 27): Gideon – I don’t follow what I feel.
Discussion Goal:
I can trust God and take a step.
Start Talking (Conversation Starter):
What’s something you were nervous to try at first, but once you did it, you thought, “That wasn’t as bad as I expected”?
Think It Through (and Talk It Out)
Leader Tip: Choose questions that resonate with your group’s age, experiences, and current understanding. There’s no pressure to cover all the questions — pick the ones that fit your group the best.
Read Judges 6:36-40. Gideon kept asking God for signs before he moved forward. Where do you see yourself doing the same thing? Why do we tend to want to wait for certainty before taking a step?
Gideon eventually moved, even without having everything figured out. (See Judges 7.) Where in your life do you feel stuck because you’re waiting for clarity, confidence, or the “perfect” moment?
Read 2 Corinthians 5:7. What does this verse mean to you? What’s the difference between trusting God and just overthinking everything and not moving?
⬆️ Leader Tip: We talked about discernment last week! Making a decision in faith doesn't mean we just make a choice and then believe it will work out. A decision made in faith also needs to include discernment — going to God and His Word to try and make the best decision possible.
Trusting God often looks like taking the next step while not seeing the whole plan. What could a “next step” of faith look like for you this week — something specific and real?
👀🔎 Eye Check: Gideon took a step and trusted God even though he wasn’t sure. What’s something you feel that doesn’t line up with what God wants for you? Talk about it as a group, and encourage each other: Don’t follow what you feel.
Pray: God, thank You for being patient with us, even when we hesitate or doubt. You see the full picture, even when we don’t. Help us trust You enough to move forward — not because we feel ready, but because You are with us. Give us clarity for our next step and the courage to take it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Additional Questions
What thoughts tend to keep you stuck? (e.g., “What if I fail?” “What if I choose wrong?” “What will people think?”) How do those thoughts affect the choices you make?
How might learning to take steps of faith now shape some bigger decisions you might face later — like college, career direction, or relationships?
Have you ever seen God show up after you took a step? What did that teach you about trusting Him?
If you keep waiting for certainty in an area of your life, where might that lead you? What could it cost you to stay stuck instead of moving in faith?
