Middle School Week 1 (December 3): In the Stable
Series Overview – In the Stable
Jesus didn’t come to get; He came to give — His time, His love, and ultimately His life.
Series Verses:
“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Luke 2:6-7
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…” John 3:16
Discussion Goal:
When you give to Jesus — your time, talents, or kindness — you show what matters most to you. Your generosity tells His story.
Start Talking (Conversation Starter):
What’s the weirdest, funniest, or most unexpected Christmas gift you’ve ever received — or given?
Optional activity: I’m Giving…
Tell everyone to think of something they can give to the group in 20 seconds or less. It could be:
sharing a word of encouragement, showing something they created or care about (a photo, hobby, or quick story), giving a helpful tip or piece of advice, sharing a favorite verse or quote that motivates them, etc. Go around and have each person share what they chose to give.
Think It Through (and Talk It Out)
Leader Tip: Choose questions that resonate with your group’s age, experiences, and current understanding. There’s no pressure to cover all the questions — pick the ones that fit your group the best.
Read Luke 2:1-7. People sometimes think the most impressive things are also the most important. How does Jesus’ birth challenge this idea? Why do you think God sent Jesus to be born in such a humble place?
BIBLE BITE: When we say Jesus was born in a “humble place,” we mean He wasn’t born in a palace or a mansion. He was born in a stable — simple, ordinary, and nothing special by the world’s standards.
Jesus’ birth shows that God values humility over status. What does it mean to be humble? How can focusing on humility instead of looking cool or trying to impress others help you be generous?
LEADER NOTE: Being humble means thinking about others before yourself and not acting like you’re better than anyone else. Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself — it means thinking of yourself less so you can see and serve others.”
Think about something you’re really good at — a talent, hobby, or skill. How could you use that gift to serve someone else this week?
How would using your gift that way be an act of generosity?
Pray: Jesus, thank You for showing us through Your birth that You care more about our hearts than our popularity or money. You’re more than enough for us. Help us be generous by giving our time and talents to glorify and thank You. In Your name we pray, amen.
Additional Questions
Who is the most generous person you know? What do they do that makes them generous?
How you spend your time shows what matters most to you. If we asked your friends what matters to you, what would they say? How does that challenge or encourage you to be generous?
Read Mark 10:45. Jesus came to serve and give. What are some ways people your age can “give” that don’t involve money? How could doing those things tell others about Jesus?
